At the beginning of July, container hinterland logistics network Contargo celebrated a milestone in e-mobility. The enterprise’s fleet of battery-driven heavy-duty semitrailer tractors passed the one million kilometre mark. Following an intensive testing, optimisation and start-up phase, a rapid increase in the share of battery electric kilometres in the enterprise’s road mileage is now envisaged.
Contargo has been operating battery-driven 44-tonners for five years now. The first vehicles had batteries with a relatively small capacity and a range under 100 kilometres. In the meantime, Contargo has 30 fully-electric heavy-duty semitrailer tractors in service for container transport by road; another 60 have been ordered and are expected to be delivered shortly. Then the number of electrically-powered kilometres will go up fast. With 90 vehicles in operation, Contargo will be able to record distances of 5.5 million electrically-powered kilometres annually.
